Dante Moore billboard in Tokyo

Post by greenyellow »

Just days before Oregon players head to Japan, Oregon has placed billboards up in Tokyo up of Dante Moore, likely signifying the start of the expected Heisman campaign for him.

How well did that work out for Joey? But I like the effort by UO. Trying to get foreign eyes (TV $) on the team, I get. Maybe help baseball recruiting.

Are you kidding? That worked out EXTREMELY well for Joey and for UofO! Keep in mind that the late 1990s was an entirely different era in terms of media and exposure. That billboard forced Harrington into the national conversation and entrenched Oregon as an innovative program willing to take big swings at success. This was that time period when East Coast Bias was alive and painfully real. And by the end of the year, "Joey Heisman" was a finalist and in the final three, which was pretty damn good for a west coast kid at a non-"blue blood" school.

Different motivation nowadays. I honestly don't understand the marketing science behind this move. Maybe it's because social media makes a billboard in Japan more noteworthy (and effective) than one in NYC. Who knows. But after all these years I absolutely trust the Oregon/Nike marketing machine.
Willie Taggart is a dick.

Ha I kinda like when they do this! But the same time, I’d like if they spent this money retaining Laya and Lauaki…

Well he made it to NYC as a Heisman finalist, with pedestrian stats. And somehow was a top 3 pick, even though most Duck fans would tell you at the time, they figured he would be a 2nd round pick. So it worked out really well for him

Worked out great for him and Oregon as a whole. I'm curious what your interpretation of the situation is

Oregon spending money on Heisman campaigns for Bo, Dillon, and Dante is them showing recruits the reach the program has and how they can help their prospective NIL deals.

Yeah, I am willing to buy that it all contributes to the Oregon QBU mystique. The reality at the moment is that really good QB's are willing to wait in line to start for Oregon, so however we got here, keep doing that.

Hopefully Nike gets things worked out soon.

Nike Stock 2021: $163.63
Nike Stock 2026: $41.82

$1000 invested in 2021 at 6% = $1338
$1000 invested in S&P 500 index fund in 2021 = $1885
$1000 invested in Nike Stock in 2021 = $340

I think the Knight family is identified as still owning ~ 20% of Nike? Of course Nike is able to work on several things at once; but, c'mon guys, sell those shoes and shirts. "Good luck, we are all counting on you!"

I'm all for the billboard. There are numerous benefits even if they are indirect to the football program.

I think they should follow up by putting the giant inflatable duck in Tokyo Bay or ??? during the event. The amount of social media buzz that would generate in Japan would be considerable.
