If you had to fire one coach on the coaching staff right now, who would it be and why?

In hindsight I’m realizing I was too much of a Will Stein hater and the more I looked into this I have realized that both he and Coach Meh have had their hands tied with the OL play, and to an extent having a 1 read QB with a golden arm.

I do think if Dan had to fire a member of the offensive coaching staff it should probably be Terry. There is no doubt in my mind he could be an awesome OLine coach someday, but he was probably put in a role he wasn’t ready for, though unfortunately I think we could say that about a lot of the coaching staff with Dan’s hiring habits. I have high hopes for guys like Tofi and Nacho, but I’ve been watching some analysis of the footwork/handwork of guys on the OLine and it isn’t good, and guys rarely seem to get better under Terry, they just stay the same guys under him. Only exception from my perspective is Poncho who does seem to be better this year

I’ve never understood the love and excuse making for Terry. He’s always seemed like a coach who doesn’t really know what he’s doing and is just guessing. As evidenced by his insistence on rotating a unit that least benefits—and is often hurt—from constant rotation. How he starts every season with no idea who his best 5 OL are is beyond me.

But people like QB11 are still talking about how great the line will be once the freshman get more into the rotation. The goalposts always get moved for the OL, which Doug actually called him out on that during their most recent show.

As evidenced by his insistence on rotating a unit that least benefits—and is often hurt—from constant rotation. How he starts every season with no idea who his best 5 OL are is beyond me.

But people like QB11 are still talking about how great the line will be once the freshman get more into the rotation. The goalposts always get moved for the OL, which Doug actually called him out on that during their most recent show.

I listened to that today and kinda wish Doug spoke up more, cause like he said, how much longer can we say “well in two years Terry will have this OLine looking great!” These are mostly his guys, why does Fox Crader look so poor? Why is Dave Iuli not getting better? It certainly brings things into question and an OC will be very limited by an underperforming OLine.

I also decided to go watch some of the PSU game to see if QB11’s hype regarding Nacho and Tofi was warranted, especially that they should start after the bye week, I have no clue what he’s talking about. They might be great someday but if we spend most of the season starting Nacho at LT Moore will get sacked a ton, he’s giant and strong but a complete statue.

Hopefully the OLine gets better and gets better quickly. I studied the PSU game a little bit and the OLine was a mess, but Oregon just had too good of athletes. If the OLine performs like that again the ducks will be 2-2 going into the bye week (unless the defense plays lights out) and then Dan will have to question where Terry is the right man for the job. I understand the hope for Tofi and Nacho, but until this season Terry has heavily relied on guys recruited before him and transfer portal additions, and this year he’s heavily relying on his guys, and we continue to see guys not develop or get better, and sometimes look even worse (Harper, Cornelius, Iuli, Crader so far, to name a few) and that has to bring the OLine coaching into question.

Yeah the can always gets kicked down the road to the next generation of players. It’s a great way to keep fans coming back and wanting more.

But yeah, I didn’t see anything from the OL against PSU to make me think they’ve figured things out. I expect they’ll get better as the season goes on as they usually do but that’s also not hard to do when you start every season a complete mess up front.

Like Doug I’m sort of over all the hype until we get serious about the OL. We can be loaded at the skill positions, and even dominant on D, but if we can’t run the ball or protect the QB it kind of doesn’t matter. And I’m really tired of the massive hype train every year—which the program itself is the primary fuel for—only for us to come out and struggle against Idaho St, get dominated by a really bad OSU program, and end the year with an eventual no show blow out.

The one thing I'm holding out hope for is this coaching staff tends to view the first 2-3 games as practice. We've seen this in years past. They don't bring real game plans, they're ultra vanilla, they rotate guys constantly, etc. And then when the "real" games start (never mind that we lost one of our practices) they have real game plans and real rotations and suddenly things look better.

I'm just hoping that's the case.
