Wilcox having 2 out of 9 .500 or better season is really bad. Rolovich has had 4 out of 6 seasons with a .500 or better record. Okay, so just transitive property. Not a Rolovich fan, but have always liked the idea of Cal being good so hopefully if they make that decision it works out.

Rolovich doesn't have a big track record so it's really hard to say strongly one way or another. I feel like any decent hire can do better than 2 for 9. So if I were a betting man, I'd bet he would do better. Let's revisit this thread in a few seasons.pudgejeff wrote: Mon Nov 24, 2025 3:45 pmUOducksTK1 wrote: Mon Nov 24, 2025 3:43 pmWilcox having 2 out of 9 .500 or better season is really bad. Yeah, my memory was more 2021 where his team ended up 2nd in the Pac 12 North behind the Ducks. I guess in retrospect, anyone is free to decide how much credit to assign to him for how his team did; at the time I thought it was a pretty good result for a team like Washington State after they lost Mike Leach. I do think the violent reaction is interesting, given the relatively small amount of data. You dismiss Cal as mediocre and yet that is the very team we are talking about him coaching.frogsnouts wrote: Mon Nov 24, 2025 11:08 amWhat? Cal can do better if they actually want to put effort in. They are a great school in a football hotbed state, if they want try in football for the first time in a decade they could easily succeed in a weak ACC.

I just think any P4 school should look to a coach that has at least been a position coach in the last half decade. Sure if it’s Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, you risk it. A guy who went 5-6 at a P5 school just shouldn’t be the goal if you are Cal.Phalanx wrote: Mon Nov 24, 2025 4:16 pmYeah, my memory was more 2021 where his team ended up 2nd in the Pac 12 North behind the Ducks. I don’t have a pick for who they should pursue, we’ll see how much money they can throw around. It feels like they are at least attempting a reset here.

He was coaching at a high school in the years after he was fired. It's not like he's been away from the game. Anyway, I think he is a legit choice if the current batch of players like him. People ripped on Cristobal and said he didn't have the chops, but the players gave him a vote of confidence and now he is a fairly successful head coach, despite his issues. I think the anti-Rolovich thing is probably because he wouldn't get the jab, which I suspect is a function of his slavic/religious heritage. It certainly isn't because he lacks a resume - the guy was the 2019 Mountain West Coach of the Year. I know that doesn't fall under your half-decade window, but I still think it counts.

If he was coaching in high school at least that’s something. Wikipedia and the Cal website didn’t mention that so it looked like he hadn’t been working for 3+ years.Phalanx wrote: Mon Nov 24, 2025 7:29 pmfrogsnouts wrote: Mon Nov 24, 2025 5:31 pm

I’m just a fan of swinging for something fresh if I’m a ~decade depressed Cal program. Get some young coordinator similar to what Oregon and ASU have done and see if it clicks. Can’t really be in much worse of a spot.

If you're Cal, do you go with Tosh Lupoi or Ryan Grubb? That's the choice, IMO. Tony White would be my third choice, but I haven't seen his name connected to it.

Re: Coaching Hot Seat
I think I would go with Lupoi who has shown an ability to recruit and understands how to connect to players better. Grubb is certainly a better X's/O's guy, but that's not always the best thing for a HC and Cal needs a boost of energy after Wilcox and Grubbs is far to demure in that regard. Grubb may have a higher floor as a coach but I think Tosh would give them a chance at a greater ceiling if his recruiting were to pay off for Cal and he would be less likely to bolt should he succeed.StevensTechU wrote: Tue Nov 25, 2025 9:53 am If you're Cal, do you go with Tosh Lupoi or Ryan Grubb? I just don't know why Tosh would take that job. He has done a great job resurrecting his career and reputation at Oregon, and he should choose the next gig very carefully. If his strength is recruiting, why would he go to a school who is always crying about budget shortfalls? Also, doesn't he have some baggage from when he coached there before? It seemed like he left under less than ideal circumstances. I think it makes sense to be seen interviewing there for the publicity, but he should hold out for a more serious program, unless he just loves it at Cal (his alma mater).

Hiring season is starting to pick up:
North Texas HC Eric Morris will be the new HC at Oklahoma State.
Looks like Jim Mora will be the next HC at Colorado State.

I think we see a majority of the open, high-profile coaching vacancies will be filled by the end of the weekend.

Podcast I listen to mentioned that Lupoi is the betting favorite for Cal, Jedd Fisch is the favorite for Florida and Tommy Rees is the favorite for UCLA. Doesn't mean a lot - Eric Morris was the favorite at Arkansas but just took the Oklahoma State job - but interesting nonetheless.

All fun discussion, but let's get to the REAL job vacancy...who's the next HC at Portland State?
